Honesty About AI: The Customer's Responsibility and the "Magic Wand🪄" Misconception
We’ve written about this before in our blog on DAM trends for 2026, but many organizations hope that AI will solve their entire “metadata problem” in one fell swoop. The reality is more down-to-earth: AI doesn’t know your organization. An AI model doesn’t inherently understand your organization’s specific brand language, internal campaign codes, product numbers, or unique taxonomy. A solid, human-defined metadata structure remains absolutely essential as the foundation for AI to build effectively.
Furthermore, the use of AI within a DAM environment also raises clear questions and legal responsibilities for the client itself:
Unfiltered AI tags & medical/sensitive data: AI models do not inherently recognize ethical or legal restrictions. For example, a vision model might tag a photo with terms such as “wheelchair” or “crutches.” Under the GDPR, this falls directly under the category of special categories of personal data (medical data and profiling). As an organization, you must consciously decide whether you want to automatically accept such tags.
Facial Recognition & Right to Privacy: Just use AI to recognize everyone in photos? Forget it. Under the GDPR and the European AI Act, you need explicit consent from the individuals involved. Without consent, you’ll quickly cross legal boundaries.
