What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are stored by a web browser on request of a website or web application. Cookies are meant to remember information that can be used on multiple web pages, for example whether you are logged in or what you put in the shopping basket of a web shop. Cookies ensure, among other things, that you do not have to log in again on each new page during your visit to a website and that you do not have to pay for each product before you can continue shopping. However, cookies can also contain a unique code with which your behaviour on the internet can be followed. This is particularly a risk in the case of advertising networks used on many different sites, as on each of these sites a cookie can be read by the advertising network and a profile of your behaviour can be created. Therefore, anyone who places cookies is obliged to inform you about how cookies are used.
