The different types of DAM systems and their unique characteristics

Your digital assets are the building blocks of your brand. With all the platforms on which companies and brands operate - from websites and social media to analog ads and internal systems - oversight is indispensable. Therefore, managing those digital assets properly is no longer a luxury, but a basic requirement. Whether you're just getting started with digital asset management (DAM) or already using a system, it pays to delve into which solution best suits your organization. How do you give your valuable assets a place where they are secure, accessible and well organized? In this blog, Sebastiaan de Ruiter takes you through the world of DAM systems and the different choices you can make.

What is a DAM system?

In short, a DAM system is a digital storage device that helps manage, organize, and distribute your digital files. Think photos, videos, logos, documents, and other brand assets. Over the years, DAM has become a bit of a catch-all term to sum up everything to do with managing digital assets. But if you look closely, you can see that there are quite a few differences within that container.

Different types of DAM systems

If you dive into the world of DAM, you quickly discover that there are many variants. Each platform has its own focus and functionalities. Here we list the main types.

1. Entry-level DAM systems

These systems are ideal for small teams or organizations just starting out with DAM. They are user-friendly, affordable and provide a simple solution for managing basic files. The functionalities are standard and leave little or no room for customer-specific configurations. Don't need complex integrations? Then an entry-level DAM is a good choice.

2. Brand Asset Management (BAM).

BAM systems focus specifically on brand files. These are corporate identity files, logos and other visual elements that contribute to your brand consistency. A Brand Portal is an example of a BAM system. Ideal if your focus is on consistent brand identity and solid brand management.

3. Media Asset Management (MAM).

Do you work a lot with videos and audio? Then a MAM system is probably what you're looking for. These systems are designed for storing and managing media files, such as episodes of TV programs or advertising campaigns. For media companies like NPO, MAX, VPRO or RTL, this is a logical choice.

4. Product Asset Management (PAM).

PAM systems bridge the gap between PIM (product information) and DAM systems. Suppose you have product information and an image to go with it, or you have an image and want product information to go with it. In a PAM system, you can find that combination in a structured way. The 'P' can of course also stand for projects or collections. Metadata plays a more intensive role here than in a DAM system. With DAM, metadata is mainly about finding files quickly and efficiently. With PAM, metadata is not only important for finding assets, but also for use and integration on different platforms. Thereby, relevant information, such as product codes or prices, is automatically included.

5. Enterprise DAM systems

Then we have the custom DAM systems for enterprises. These do not involve certain configurations, where you move sliders left and right to tailor the solution to your organization. They are completely tailored to the specific needs of your organization. Think customer-specific interfaces, customized workflows and unique integrations. An example is a platform like SharePoint, which can be built into a DAM system with the right expertise.

A flexible DAM solution that grows with any organization

Some DAM solutions offer the perfect balance of simplicity and customization, suitable for organizations of any size. At Comrads, we offer such a flexible and configurable solution. Our cloud-based DAM system adapts to your organization - whether you're a small team looking for oversight or a corporate enterprise needing complex workflows. It is fully configurable and scalable, so it always grows with your organization. In addition, it integrates smoothly with other marketing automation modules, such as a brand portal, PAM module or webshop. So you get a solution that not only fits your current needs now, but is flexible enough to change with your growing ambitions.

How do you choose the right DAM system?

Choosing a DAM system starts with defining your needs. Ask yourself a few questions:

  • How big is your organization?

  • What type of files do you primarily manage?

  • How important is integration with other systems?

  • Where is your organization's focus?

  • What is your budget and your experience with DAM?

If you are just starting out, an entry-level DAM offers simplicity and overview. If you already have more experience and higher demands, then you are probably looking at a more advanced DAM system with more functionality.

Ease of use and support also play a role

The feel of a solution also plays a big role. A user-friendly interface makes the difference between a platform that works well and one that frustrates you. In addition, your vendor's approach is important. Do you choose a local player with personal attention or do you prefer to work with a large corporate player?
